Walmart ammo..
« on: April 08, 2016, 11:14:48 AM »
I'm not a reloader so therefore I'm always on the lookout for cheap ammo.

Well it seems that Wally mart is the winner hands down with their Federal blue box power shok ammo..

.30 .30.....$20.97/box
.30 06......$23.97/box
.303 brit...$28.97/box

This stuff seems to group not to bad but my question is..

Is it any good for hunting? I'm sure it will knock a deer on it's arse without any problems but what about moose or elk?

Will you get good expansion,penetration,etc?

I've mostly used Winchester ammo for hunting but never this blue box stuff.

Thoughts and/or experience with this ammo?

Uses it many times over the years coming from a small town our selection was always limited so we shot what there was. That's all we shot out of our guns for years was Fedearl power shock and we sighted many a rifle in with it. Killed plenty of moose with my old .270 with those shells, plenty of bear and saw it shot out of '06's, 7 mags and all sorts of guns all with good results. Way to much emphases put on that stuff these days just because there are options. If it shoots good out of your gun then it's good. If it make a hole in the lungs then it's good.

Sonny,, it's good amo,, shoot it.

Likely more stuff killed with federal blue box than anything else in Canada.

I know a reloader that can't make a more accurate load then fed blue box gives him.

I'd have to agree with you walleyes.

Back in the day we didn't worry about what the bullet was constructed of or if it was coefficient.(whatever the hell that means)

We just stopped in to the local MacLeods hardware and picked up a box of Winchester 180gr powerpoints or Imperial kling core soft points and then we went hunting. The only thing that we were concerned about was putting the bullet into the boiler and if you did that then the moose seldom took more than 2 or 3 steps before it went down.

I don't hunt as much nowadays but I sure do put a lot of holes into targets now. ;)

btw.... I need to shut up about who has cheap ammo.Someone cleaned out wallyworld of all the cheap Federal 30-30 ammo.  :(

Blue box Fed .30-06 and .308 went up by $3 per box,.303 brit went up by $5 per box..30-30 is the same price for now but for how long who knows?

This was at Spruce Grove and Edson Walmarts..I'm sure all the wallyworlds went up. :(

Good find sonny. As soon as I retire I'm getting back into the reloading game. Something I have had no time for now in a few years. Of course at that price you beat the cost on reloading.
