Zastava rifles..
« on: January 27, 2015, 07:38:06 PM »
So I was looking at the tradeex site and seen some Zastava rifles. They have some in 6.5 x 55 and I think they look interesting.

Anyone here have a Zastava rifle and if so thoughts on them?

I kinda like the looks of them but unsure if they are worth the money.

I have two.
They are made by the same outfit that was producing actions for the Germans til 1941.
So probably the only real new large ring mauser actions available anymore.

As it happens I have one in 6.5 Swede just like the one in your picture and it shoots as good as anything else off the shelf.
The other has a sport style stock.

The blueing is comparable to more expensive rifles the action was pretty smooth off the get go and it arrived clean. The wood is pretty nice but the finish is a bit rough.
Good wood that is hidden behind cheap laquer.

My plan is to stip the laquer and hand rub it with tung or walnut oil to darken the wood a bit and brighten the grain more.... I'm kinda fussy that way. I usually apply about 2 dozen coats ending with 2000 grit.

Oh... and with tradex...the rifle shown in the photo...is the one you get so no worries about getting one with a grain different than the one you fell in lust with.

Pardon me but can I please have my country back?

Lol
Like to live dangerous eh?
I have a 375 H&H in a heavier rifle and thats enough.
Mind you... I never use recoil pads.
Hopefully your next post wont be telling us how well you are doing in physio....
Enjoy the rifle and the compliments that it will fetch for you.

Marmot , try Tru-oil, the knives I build with natural hardwood get a few coats of it.......apply , wipe off , allow dry time , OOO steel wool , and re-do til your hearts content , as per the procedure sounds like your well aware of the how to , just thought I'd mention

Thanks for the tip Rob

To be honest i never thought of it

The last one I did....I already had good quality tung oil and was finishing up a turned bowl so had the walnut oil on hand so just went to them without much thought
Who doesnt like hand rubbed wood ? ( no pun intended)
A quick light application once a year and they look good forever.

I do have some 000 wool kicking around to.... Not sure why i never thought to use it
Probably could have saved myself some work

At least i remembered to do a light sanding with soapy water between coats

Well... When i get to that zastava stock i'll make sure to do as you suggested product and application wise

One thing i do recall is that it took me awhile to find the right tung oil for the job i originally bought it for
Some are adulterated and iirc the result is a finish that is less durable
