base layer or long johns

I bought some helly hansen poply pro long johns from Marks a couple of months ago and they shrank so no longer fit. On the weekend sportscheck had some underarmour base layer 1 on sale so I tried those and was cold in them this morning walking in a wind. Any recommendations for long johns not to hot and not to cold?

KUIU merino wool.

I won't wear anything but merino wool anymore - buy lightweight and wear more than one layer if cold.

Another benefit is they won't reek like "polypew". Nice on a 5 day sheep hunt lol
