15 Year old first deer
« on: November 25, 2014, 11:02:05 AM »
Well, I have been having a blast with the kids this year.  My 11 year old got his Whitetail in Texas, my 13 year old daughter got hers in Alberta and I helped a friends son get his first buck with a rifle.  Now what to do for the rest of the season??  Well my neighbours 15 year old has been looking to try hunting (passed his hunter ed, got his minors PAL etc) but has never gone as his parents dont hunt.  Anyway we tried on November 15 and got to around 225 yards 3 different times on whitetail bucks but he had swings and misses.  We thought maybe the gun was out but I smoked a coyote at 340 yards so it must have been something he was doing (he does shoot shotguns but not rifles).  Anyway we made a plan to go on November 21 again.  Derick has an air rifle and practiced hard all week holding on target and not yanking the trigger.  We went out on the Friday and I picked him up a partner tag on a antlerless whitetail tag I have so any whitetail could be harvested.  I also switched him to my .243 that I had built for the kids.  We only hiked 400 yards when we came across a couple does feeding on a bank.  We found a good setup and got into position for a laying shot at 241 yards.  We took our time and he waited for the perfect shot.  Boom he smoked her perfect and she went down after about a 20 yard sprint.

He had succcess and was definitely smiling hard.  The 3 misses from the last weekend were weighing heavy with him.  He smoked her perfect and even cut her heart in half with the shot.  After a few pictures and field dressing her, we still had a couple hours to hunt and the wind was right to continue hunting the draw that were we in.  We hiked for about 15 minutes and I seen movement on another hill.  It was whitetail buck and I knew where we could get a shot.  We got setup and the buck was 227 yards away.  Unfortunately we were facuing west and the sun was setting so it hard to find the buck in the scope.  The buck worked his way down the hill and got in an area where we could pick him up in the scope.  Derick got ready and made another perfect shot, hitting the buck in the heart as well.

Anyway, he was ecstatic and I have recruited another one to the hunting fraternity!!

I could only go on the Friday as I was planning to chase elk on the weekend.  I went out for myself for the first time this year and was rewarded with a great 6x5 bull on Sunday.

Its a 302 bull southwest of Pincher.  Quite a few in there, seen over 500 elk in the 2 days I hunted.

Nice to see there is still game in there.

We hunted 302 a few years back, spent 3 falls hunting in there, 02, 03, 04 I believe. We were able to pull a nice 5 point herd bull out the 2nd year we were there. The 3rd year we hunted was crazy over ran by hunters and we swore never to return and we haven't. We hunted mainly up from Lynx Creek area. It was nice country but way to busy for us rednecks.

Definitely lots of hunters but I am lucky to be able to get on some private land.  This is my 3 rd year in a row getting a bull off this property.  Definitely very appreciative and fortunate to have that access.

Downloaded the video I got of Derrick's doe.  Never took video of the buck getting shot.
