2015 Moose Hunt.
« on: October 08, 2015, 03:27:20 PM »
Back from our moose hunt yesterday and another sucsessful year for us. Weather was awesome couldn't have had it any better, nice frost every morning no winds for calling all was good.

Very disappointed in the amount of sign this year again even worse than last year in all honestly I was not very confident on our chances this year after the first day. There just wasn't a lot of animals by the looks of things. On a positive side it looks like the wolf numbers are down as we didn't see very much sign of wolf activity so hopefully we will see an upswing in moose numbers over the coming years.

We stuck with our plan regardless. Called close to camp in the mornings at a spot that had by the looks of it one bull in the area and in the afternoons we would go for our quad trip down our trail and call at a spot about 8 miles from camp. We called at the spot close to camp 2 mornings with not a sound but I was confident I could bring one in from some wheres as the sound was so good. I told the boys we aren't going to get disappointed and start to chase around, we will just stick to the plan and work at it. After the first night calling with no activity when we went by there the next afternoon we had a fresh set of bull and cow tracks by the looks of it they came sometime through the night to check it out,, this was a good a confidence builder for us. We did our scouting trip and came back and called there that evening but no response. Monday morning (day 3 ) found us back at our morning spot, I had noticed a fresh set of cow tracks on my way in that gave some sign of live animals anyways. We were set up and calling as the sun was just breaking the skyline a crisp clear cold morning I am sure they could hear me for 4 miles when I let go through the birch bark. An hour and a half passed with 4 sequences of calls gone and not a sign but I was very happy with the morning and was going to stick it out until atleast 10 that morning and give it a good call. About 9 sometime I noticed a new object down the line about 600 yards, one quick glance through the binos confirmed it,, yup a young bull was on his way. I gave Sam the notice as he was watching the other way down the line to get ready. We got down behind our quads ( yup that's right I stand right by my quad and call sometimes ) we crouched down behind the machines and Sam chambered a round. It didn't take that little bull long to come down the line about 3 min passed and he was getting close. I told Sam the next time he stops he will have to take him as he is getting close he will be to close to wait for him to turn he has to take a front shot for the heart. He came right up to 100 yards and stopped. Sam didn't waste time and placed a perfect shot. The bull spun sideways and jumped off the line into cover. Sam assured me he made a solid hit. We made our way up to the spot and off the line not 20 yards the bull was down. A couple high fives and a hug and the work was on. Sam made a perfect heart shot at 105 yards not a pound of meat wasted.

Not a big bull but a very clean not a smell to him and very nice shape. I am sure he will awesome table fare. He is in the shop hanging as I type we will cut him up Monday. We spent the next couple days filling our grouse possession limit for 3 guys to bring home as well.

Couple pics.

The boys getting at er. I just gut now after that the boys take over then I do the splitting after.

Had this not far from one of our calling spots after an evening of calling.

Congrats to Sam!!!  Obviously the young man learned his hunting skills from Les & Richard. ;D  It should be some fine grill material, to say the least.  Your voice alone carries like a locomotive horn in the mountains in normal conversation, let along running it through a megaphone in the bush!! ;)  Take care man.

Great pictures Terry!!! Looks a lot like a "few" sessions that occurred in Conrad's shop.  Enjoy the results!

Thanks for the info, I have a 280 rem like your son and thought it would do for moose. The last moose I shot was with a 338 win mag, too much gun. Great pictures, the work starts after the game is down. Looks like good meat for the winter.

.280 is plenty of gun. I purchased a .280 for each of the boys for their first big game rifle as they came to age. All 700's different years but all 700's they have and continue to serve all three of them well. Personely I shot a .270 for years maybe 20 or so. That gun dropped numerous animals over a dozen moose and the same I am sure deer. It's all in the placement.

I love the .280 it's that nitch between the '06 and the .270 fine guns.
