Alberta Slam / Super Slam
« on: May 23, 2011, 11:42:26 PM »
Just curious how many of you have completed an Alberta Slam ( Alberta only ) .Either with a single weapon, or with a combination? I for one think it's pretty cool for the few that may have accomplished something like that, especially with a single weapon, like a bow or muzzle loader. Just wondering if anyone else cares about something like this???  Or does something like this even exist ???

Here's my list of 10

•   Whitetail ( Buck )
•   Mule Deer ( Buck )
•   Moose ( Bull)
•   Elk ( Bull )
•   Bighorn Sheep ( Ram )
•   Antelope (Buck)
•   Cougar
•   Black Bear
•   Wolf
•   Coyote

My criteria for an Alberta Slam is , medium to large game, on a open, general, or draw tag. It has to be a hunt that isn't limited to a once in a lifetime hunt, much like the bottom 3 !!!.

•   Mountain goat
•   Grizzly Bear *
•   Buffalo

For the lucky few who pulled a hunt of a life time, or are old enough to add the extra 3 , how many have, I guess then the Alberta Super Slam out of 13???

I feel fortuante to live in a province that allows me the oppoturnity to hunt a huge variety of game. I also feel fortuante to have arrowed 7 / 10 , hopefully soon i can finish off my Alberta Slam. I pray that I live long enough to have a chance at perhaps a super slam, one day...maybe!

I expect some of the usual suspects to be close, or Slammed......Isb, nube, sheepguide???

I shot my Buffalo from Elk Island ;)  Really I did.  You can too!
Not sure if he really counted as he ended up on 3 quarter sections of land that was fenced when I shot him but I got him with my bow when I was young.

Got my Grizz as well in Alebrta. ;D
REally I have never paid any attention to what species I have not shot in Alberta.  I would think most guys would have the top ten easy enough if they hunted much.  I would think if they don't have it the only ones that would be hard to get would be the ram and maybe a wolf.
Good luck getting the Goat draw.  Might be a tough one with that.

I like the idea.  When I hunted turkeys in Washington State earlier this year, they actually list the hunters who have done career turkey slams in their hunting regulations.  There are 3 species of turkey in Wash (Merriams, Rio and Easterns). Surprisingly there were only about 40 names listed and they did list repeats of guys that had done it numerous times.

It is a great province and basically we can hunt everyone of these species every year (except lopers and the bottom 3).  The only one I am missing is the sheep so may have to work on that.  For my archery, I would need the sheep, elk, moose and wolf).  Archery Elk and moose are on the list this year with hunts already planned.

I have seven of the ten so looks like I have some work to do.

The sheep one will take a bit,, waiting on my once in a lifetime draw to come in.. If not I am holding out until one day I can afford a local outfitter to go out with. The time and money involved in a sheep when I do go for one I want every advantage on my side. For the few extra dollars involved to acquire a guide I believe it would be money well spent.

Same go's for the Cougar hunt,,, not much point in attempting that on your own. A person may as well do it right and go with a guide.

I would add turkey to your top list even though its really not a 'big game' animal.

I've taken 10/10 on the first list and 0/3 on the second list. Praying to the special license gods there! I've been fortunate to mix it up a lot and take plenty by rifle, muzzle loader and archery. Gotta love Alberta.  ;D

Oh that last line hurts and brings back some bad memorys, I was heading up north whitetail hunting with my best friend and his wife when his wife took out a nice trophy WT. Wrote off the blazer and to this day I have to thank her for some incredible driving to keep everyone alive. Best deer we saw all week.

Coyote a couple times the first one ripped up the front bumper, grill, hood and passenger side lights on my old '88 Chevy.

Mule deer doe ran right into the side of that same truck hardly a scratch on the truck but she  didn't even twitch.

Although partridge isn't part of this thread I have to add two memorable partridge kills, first one through the grill at about 70 mph thought i took some kind of RPG when the radiator pretty much evaportated, second one came right off the front of the hood, couldn't see a thing for a second with all the feathers it took about 10 seconds before I saw the thing land behind me in the rearview mirror.

I thought you said you had a couple of rams already Ducky?  I must have heard you wrong when I was chating with you on the phone.  Hopefully you get one this year along with that big whitetail you wanted.
