Checked the trail cams.  Turns out there are 5 different bucks, 2 does and 3 fawns hanging around in the farm bush.
The bigger buck we saw from afar is actually a decent 3x3, he would be a shooter for me.  The next best is a young 4x4 that might be really good in a year.
Two other medium 3x3's, and a small fork horn rounded out the bucks for now.
One of the new fawns is definitely a buck....lol (see pic).

Yes a little on the light side for sure. Nice shape to them but they need a couple years to get some mass.

Love the pictures Axe.

And someone with a dirt bike and a gun or bow strapped to his back not hiding behind the tree ?  Yet? :(

Got a surprise today at the farm.  Haven't seen one of these beautiful birds in a while.
Was able to sneak up on him pretty close in the garden to get some good cell phone pics.

Colourful creatures for sure. And darn good eating. Had the pleasure of eating a few when we were down south, beautiful big breasts in them. Legs were pretty stringy if I remember right.

Axe:

Your neighbors must have some excellent vermin and varmint control for a 22 striped rooster to run about.

My mother used to tell me that pheasants always survived quite well in your neighborhood.

In fact she saw her first game warden type out your way in the 30's. Trying to catch pheasant hunters in Model T and Model A  cars with loaded shot guns "hunting pheasants".  Mom said it was more of a moonshine operation.

My mother used to help law enforcement as an interpreter.

Please note. If you have pheasants running about your property you will notice that grey partridge and ruffed grouse start checking out who these new neighbors are.

Greylynx,
I am surprised the many big red-tail hawks/owls/coyotes/foxes haven't cleaned up on the pheasants.  We have plenty of them in the area.  About 15-20 years ago, we had plenty of pheasants around for a few years, but they didn't last for long, a couple of tough winters took them out.  They used to hang around the horse corals looking for spilled grain in the winter.  There have always been a few in the county, but never steady flourishing numbers.  No release sites nearby, so there must be always a few survivors.  The hungarian partridges (greys) are here in good numbers and seem to do just fine.  Those buggers are sure hard to hunt and usually surprise the hell out out me and are gone before I can even blink.
Shhhh about the moonshine stills, there might be a couple around yet..... :-X

Walleyes,
I only shot one pheasant and ate it years ago, it was good no doubt.  Popped him out of the air when I flushed him down by the slough when I was hunting ducks one time. We roasted it, legs were tough and stringy like you said though.

It’s sure getting that fall smell the last few days. Driving me nuts we aren’t going on a moose hunt this year.

That is not good grandpa Walleyes.

Let us look at your situation in a positive manner.

Why not have little moose hunts with the grandson?

Or, just hold little teaching sessions for the grandson in the bush.

Remember: Someone has to teach you how to poop in the bush. Keep clean hands, Open a tin can with an axe, start a fire real fast. Get grandpa a beer from the cooler.  Important stuff.

And most important. Tell grandpa stories around a campfire. Really scary stories to take back to school.

A day or two in the bush with daddy or grandpa is extremely educating to a little fella.

Oh yes we’ll be getting out quite a bit just not on our big annual trip. The grandson is running into a fine hunter, and he loves it. He’ll be getting out for deer a lot this fall and had been out for grouse a couple times already.

Went camping last weekend.
Very nice, nicest time of the year to camp.
Fished a little and shot a few chickens too.

BTW....
Best wild chicken recipe imho.
- de-breast chickens and cut into strips and fry in butter with spices to your taste.
- simmer with 2 cans of mushroom soup along with a whole red pepper cut into cubes, sliced up onion, 3 carrots thinly sliced.

Looks great Axe.

I’m thinking of headed up that way myself next couple weeks from now. If weather provides I’m going to spend a couple nights in the wall tent doing some scouting for years ahead. Going to be to the west of there about 15 miles though.

It looks like the 3x3 WT will be my shotgun season target buck this year.  He is still hanging around every few days.  There are 2 resident does with fawns that live almost exclusively in our bush so he will stay around for the rut for sure.  He looks pretty good out of velvet and has some mass and decent tine length, good body size too.  Good enough for a shotgun buck for sure.

I will have to do things right and get some mock scrapes set up and some scent rags out in strategic spots toward the end of the month. I will hunt him properly and should have a very good chance at getting him.
So far he seems to be a morning traveler, I like that.  The other bucks including that medium 4x4 are still around too, so the rut could make them a bit stupid and more worried about each other than me.  I will play on that.

A couple of moose around too, so that will be good for our antlerless tag.  Shotgun season starts Oct 25th, so only a couple of weeks away now.  I am getting excited.

That’s a shooter Axe, hopefully you can get on him in a couple weeks. Those big buggers tend to go nocturnal once the rut gets close.
