Blue Tongue??
« on: November 04, 2013, 07:34:48 PM »
So, I've been driving around getting permission lined up for deer down south and I'm hearing about major whitetail die offs. Anyone else hear what's going on or how widespread this is? Hopefully just an issue along the border. One landowner had found a few dozen dead bucks earlier in the summer, another figured there weren't any deer left due to the die off. I ended up heading west to get permission in an area I haven't hunted in several years, several hundred whitetails out and about, no decent bucks around yet. Hopefully have some luck once the season gets under way.

Haven't heard anything like that. Did you see any deer around the area? Maybe the locals don't want other hunters around ;)

Lot's of bluetomgue in 102.  We were hoping it'd stay in MT but I guess we should have known better.  Not sure how far it spread, but, ya, lot's of carcasses.

We didn't see a whitetail in 2 days looking for lopers down there this fall. I was in that area BruceW, hopefully its localized down there and not too wide spread.

I hunted in 102 today but not at the S end.  Local fellow I trust said it was bad towards Aden.  Two years ago ranchers I know were talking about it, last year they were asking me about it, I had to look it up.  I read it was really bad in MT this summer.

Where I hunted today deer were not in great numbers, but there's meat hanging in the garage.  Lotta walking spotting and stalking, but as I was resting on the 2 mile hike back to the truck, leaning on my pack weighed down with a boned out doe, my right knee throbbing, looking over the country all I could think of was, "Don't get better than this".

Put in the effort you'll find deer, but if you're looking to fill an easy tag, well, best of luck.

Glad you had some luck, some of the best terrain Alberta has to offer down there. I haven't found anything that interests me this early in the season as of yet, I'm heading north Friday otherwise will be covering ground down south again the following week. Finding deer elsewhere has been good with the snow, numbers are really solid further west.

This is likely the cause, not bluetongue but similar. http://www.healthywildlife.ca/?p=3082

It's EHD Epizootic Hemorragic Disease and not Bluetongue. I believe they found it in 3 WTs and 1 Pronghorn that were tested in southern Alberta.
