Bull Moose trail pic
« on: September 10, 2011, 10:06:38 PM »
I have many photos of this guy, and so far he looks like the best prospect for my bow moose tag. How much more growth until he sheds his velvet ? Any idea on width ?

He will probably be 30-35" and will be very zero growth before he peels I wouldnt think.

I hunt sheep to see over the next mountain not to measure the next trophy!

Sounds about what I thought as well.  Don't matter much as I think he would taste real good ;D

Got any stories of your sheep hunt Depopulator?

Yeah, I have him at 37", but of course was hoping 50". Sheep hunt went well but the weather gave all the elements of a tough hunt. Got my ram on the day 5 of 8 of a solo trip. Not a cranker or even my biggest, but I was happy to get him. Had grizz problems - too many bears in Willmore and they are getting bold.

Regardless of the size he is a dandy bull. I would take em with a bow, a rifle, a stick if I could. Never be picky with moose,, just eat and be happy..

Ya, I agree he is done growing those antlers.  As far as my guess on the width....35" plus or minus a couple.  37" isn't a bad guess.  Nice bull, go get him.

Actually I don't like the width standard which everyone seems to judge bull moose by.  Some bulls are just wider and others come out and up.  It is actually a poor measure on the trophy quality of a bull moose, imho.  My favorite bulls are the ones with the big front pans.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Pretty sure he was the same one hanging with the old boy I took last year. I was hoping he would have grown more - he was short paddled then too. Still a chance something BIGger moves into the area. If I get that "holy crap" when he starts coming through the poplars, I'll take him. If not, I'll hope he makes it through another year.

Glad you wacked a sheep.  Figured you had a good chance at it.  I'll have to chat with after the season.  I'm running out the door to go back to camp and won't be around much for the next month +

I had read a few years ago that most ungulates will have approximately 88% of their antler growth by the end of July with the last 12% during the month of August so there will be very little antler growth after August 20th I would guess.  Looks like a great bull to me.  I know he would take a Rage if he gave me the oppurtunity this year.   :D

Got out today and spent some time in my stand. Checked that camera before getting settled and it looks like a bigger dude has showed up for the rut. Not a cranker, but once the main beams start sagging, they get my attention. Now to put it all together...
