Busy Out There ?
« on: September 19, 2015, 09:16:29 PM »
From what I have heard from people it is pretty busy out there this year,, doesnt seem to be to bad around home but in the west it sounds crazy. I guess a lot of poeple are out of work so they have extra time on their hands.

What have you guys been seeing,, busier than normal ??

Glad moose zones are limited draw so it should keep it close to normal, that and we head quite a ways north as well. But they did open it for elk general where we go i hope this doesn't add to the mix its been so quiet where we go the last few years.

I went to Montana to archery hunt antelope over the weekend.  We hunted BMA (Block management Areas) north of Havre and only seen 3 hunters in 3 days - all were upland bird hunters.  I couldnt believe how few we seen.  Lots of antelope but none were interested in playing too hard.  A guy I was hunting with missed a big one at 50 yards though.  Probably had 25 setups over the 3 days and seen hundreds of antelope.  definitely a hunt that will be on my list every year.

I haven't been out in the bush anywhere but where we hunt upland birds north of lethbridge/coaldale and where I have my mulie buck tag has been quiet.  We haven't seen anyone else out yet.  One pheasant season opens it will be a little busier but for deer in my zone its always quiet, that's what a 9 year draw wait does.  I am wanting to get out in the foothills in southern alberta for some ruffies but not really sure where to go, im sure theres lots of elk hunters out there.

Weste, im interested in your montana experience for a couple reasons.  1) Did you go unguided? 2) Was it hard to get a tag and land to hunt on? 3) Did you see many upland birds?  Myself and my buddy are wanting to hunt antelope again soon and have also looked into going to montana or south Dakota upland bird hunting.

I went in the bush this past Saturday to check my trail cams and ran into a older man who was hunting moose,
He mentioned that there was 6 of them hunting in the area and they had 2 license and did get a young bull the morning before.
So I told him
- at least you guys are having better weather than last year. I came here last year to check on my cams on Sept 20th and some guys had shot a moose on the 19th and it was 26 degrees that day and the idiots had it hanging whole in the trees with the skin on it still, those retards lost their meat for sure...
- where was that he asked?
- they were parked on the first lease on the right when you come in I replied.
He then went on to say...
-THAT WAS US! 😖😖😖
I wished him good luck with their 2nd tag and went on my way.
Man, I really gotta learn to keep my foot outa my mouth! Lol

Unguided.  Its a draw for an archery antelope tag there but it was undersubscribed this year.  Tag cost $200 US and with everything else (other fees) the total was $220 US.  we seen a number of Huns and Sharptail, it would have been similar to hunting the ridge for birds.  Access to land was super easy with the Block management program.  They gave out 5600 antelope archery tags this year for all of montana and they are good for every zone in montana, perhaps the antelope numbers are better in the south and east (dakota and wyoming borders) and that why we didnt see many hunters.  Anyway, it was a blast, fairly inexpensive and will probably be annual hunt for me now.
