Central District duck opener Ontario
« on: September 16, 2012, 07:38:33 PM »
Made it up to Central Ontario for there duck opener and hunted some BIG WOODS ponds.
We get to our campsite location and setup, after that my bud says he has a friend who was baiting for bears about 150 yrds from camp and we should check it out. As we approached the bait my bud holds up his hand to stop and only 40 yrds away from us sat about a 125 lb blackie. I gave my bud crap for not bring his gauge and slugs with him to check the bait as he had a tag in his pocket. But it was still neat to see. Later that night as we were having some beers we could hear something moving through the woods not far away and not 10 mins after that a bang. Turns out "we figure" the bear got hit by a car 100 yrds from us.

After waking up and pounding back a coffee we started our 45 min walk back to our morning destination on a 6 acre pond in the middle of no where.
We just got setup in time for legal light when we spotted our first single on its way, with me and my partner both whith a WHIFF on that one.
After calling the shots on singles to my partner and him missing numerous birds, I told him I would start shooting as he was was down to about 10 shells.
Next bird in and 2 shots later I had my first woodie of the season down.
We ended the morning with me knocking down 2 woodies and a black and my partner with a woodie and mallard.
Another friend was hunting about 400 yrds away and he ended his morning with 2 mallards, 1 woodie.

That evening we opted to try another spot wich was even further into the woods.
As we were waiting for the birds to start flying, I thought I could hear some grunting. As I listened alittle carefully I was right as a bull moose was calling away deep in the woods, I told my partner to let out some calls and we got a response right away but from another moose really close. He did some raking of the brush and then started to grunt at us and was getting closer. Kept our eyes on the area he was comming from but he was a no show.
No ducks flew untill the last 15 mins of legal light and we were getting dive bombed by woodies. We managed to knock down another 5 and our opneing day was over.

No pics of the birds from the evening because my friend took a swim with his camera.....
