Congrats on the tag.. Get ready to put a hog on the wall. It's more of a shooting trip than a hunting trip but hey,, who cares get in there and shoot a once in a lifetime set of horns.. Can't wait to see what you come out of there with.

There is a world record bull in those hills I just about garuntee it.

Thanks man!
Note to self... 999 a few species. I thought, what the hell and applied in a wmu where I would like to go so here it is, watch this...
Bull Elk in 732 Suffield, awarded with a P2
Bull moose in 841 for November where I hunt whitetail and always see good bulls, awarded with a P2
Mule buck in 527 Peace River, awarded with a P3...
Luckily I applied for elk in January thinking if I ever get drawn it would break the winter blues!
Yes, I know... Horse shoe up my a**!!

I'm well aware of those monster elk in Suffield but I'm a little afraid the herds will bail out of the base once the start getting shot at and I'm in the second group so who knows what will happen there but I sure hope there'll  be a few monsters too stupid to leave! Lol
I got 3 nice 5x5 in the last 4 years on general tags so I'm not complaining here but an opportunity at a world class bull is sure exciting!!!
I found a very little for info on the net about hunting the base and what I did find is disappointing! NO PICTURES ALLOWED on the base... That said, there's no way I'll be shooting a 350"+ bull elk and not have a few pics! 😁

I would opt for lucky and be optimistic about the hunt.  Should be a blast but there is definitely some opportunity to be frustrated if its a run and gun type hunt.  If that starts to happen, I would take my chances in a different area of the base.

Might have been a good year to pull a tag on the outside of the base when there is a hunt on the base happening.  I forsee the base hunt being a run and gun with a lot of yahoos which could lead to trouble.  I am sad I didn't put in for it because there will be a lot of GIANT bulls taken.  When the shooting starts on the base, Im willing to bet those elk will scatter and quite a few will head off base.

You guys are right, all I can do is keep a positive approach and be optimistic about this hunt, yes it may turn out to be a run and gun hunt but if I can fill my tag on one of those giants that would be an experience I'm not about to forget.
Hopefully I'll be posting some monster's pics by the end of January

My honest opinion is that I would not have a rush 3 day hunt. I would like to take my time and have a great quality experience; not to compete with another 100 hunters, only have three days, restricted to only certain locations of the base......no thanks! I have a priority 11 at this time and will use it with prudence.

I don't think one would put this hunt in the quality hunt arena like I said it's more of a shoot than a hunt. But with that said. It's not a canned hunt they are free range and the trophy quality is sure there. One has to think of it as a horn hunt. Get in, shoot a big one and get out. Hey what the heck if I still lived down there and had the time I would jump on it why not..

I as well would not classify this as a quality hunt, however a shoot and scoot. I'll stick to my original game plan and target the first season in 2016 when the rut is in full swing and have a month to hunt. However, I will wait and see what pans-out with this on/off base hunting season. Who know what the government will do if the elk continue to be a problem.

I don't know, I had a last season suppl. cow tag last yr (40 min,. from my house).  It took a Lot of spotting/driving, walking/spotting to find a herd, eventually found a herd, got our cow and was home by mid afternoon.
It actually reminded me of antelope hunting in the 80's.

To the OP, patience as always, find a herd of bulls you can stalk;  it won't be as easy as those who haven't been there think it is.  We went to one area, saw nothing but bulls, changed area's, a few cows and a lot of hunters, changed area's again and eventually found a herd we could hunt.  The terrain's a Lot more varied than I expected and I not only live in the general area but used to fly crew hauls into the N end of the base from Medhat.  Wife guesses I walked about 5 mi. to get mine.  (yes, some guys got one from 70 yds beside the road, I've seldom been that lucky and not fond of crowds.  Plus wife tends to exaggerate in my favor.  :) )

I debated what to do this yr, I'm P7 for bull, I put in for cow 732.  I've never been fond of elk as all I've had is larger bulls and to me it tasted like an old WT buck (not as rank as an old mule buck).  The cow we got?  Melt in your mouth goodness.

I'm hoping for a suppl. again.  Enjoy your hunt.  Like any hunt effort will equal reward.  I'm not a horn guy but we saw some big bulls;  they weren't standing still.

I would give you the following advice:
1.  take a rangefinder
2.  More important, take shooting sticks.  I've never hunted prairie that wasn't overgrazed.  The grass is about 1.5' tall and I could't lay down to shoot, so had to shoot sitting.  Trust me on this.  Odds are it won't be a 100 yd shot.
