Elk down
« on: September 22, 2013, 07:42:11 PM »
Got out for the weekend. Hit our spot about 5 Thursday and met my buddy, we headed out right away. Checked a few spots then spotted a bunch of cows and a smaller bull at about 900 yards. Well I was watching with the binocs and this bull appeared out of nowhere. It was prime time so my buddy suggested I hoof it out there and try and sneak on them, he stayed back and called. I crouch walked through tall thistle about 500 yards and got to a grassy patch, then I crawled. I finally got within 250 yards of them and I sat and glassed, but could not see the bull. My buddy continued to bugle, then I heard the bull answer, he popped out of a small dip and was bee lining towards my buddy and quartering towards me in the process. He came by about 120 yards and I dropped him. My first bull elk, a decent 6 x 5.

My cousin was out also and he took a 5 x 4 in the same spot the next evening. Was an outstanding hunt, I don't have any pics of his bull but will post them when he sends them. I was on the way home and RCMP saw the elk horns sticking up and he stopped me and pretended he wanted to see my hunting license then all he could talk about is where I got it how far the shot was etc, all he wanted was hunting info lol, I played nice with him.

Anyone know a good taxidermist around central Alberta that could do a European style bleached skull mount in this?

There is Marco at Sugar Creek in Red Deer.  He is close to you and does nice work.  We have had work done by him in the past and were quite happy.

Marco said he couldn't do elk skull because of the size, went to Jason at Antler Hill.
