Erics first bear

my boy eric said that all he wanted for a grad present was to go on a bear hunt. i took him out of school for a couple days and headed up to the northern forest. i thought about going west as it is closer, but i know ther are more bears in the boreal, so north it was. on day two we saw a smallish chocolate brown bear, and we put the sneak on him. im still not sure how the kid missed a standing shot at 80 yards, but it turned out to be a blessing. the next day we saw a much bigger chocolate, and this time the boy made good on the chance. one hornady through the shoulders and that bear wasnt going anywhere but straight down. eric wasnt too crazy about the awful moaning that bears often do, but within a few seconds he lay still. this boar loosley measured at 5'10". not the biggest bear in the woods, but a decent one and a sweet color to boot. the kid is awful happy to have taken a very nice bear, and he will have the memories forever.

i think blonde is the most rare, and as for colors it seems that chocolate is the most common....but still nowhere near as common as black. for size....the kid is nearing 300 pounds....im 220. i figured the bear was likely around 250-275. that isnt big, but not small either. id guess that accounting for all bears, id say an average would be 200 to 250 pounds. over 300 is starting to get good. bears arent as big as most people think they are, and on average, a mature mule buck outweighs most bears.

Congratulations Eric! That bear will be the new biggest bear in this house. It is good to see you outdo your dad.
