Grizzly Bears in SW Alberta
« on: May 16, 2011, 10:18:51 PM »
Came across this in the May 13 edition of the Prairie Post.

Not sure what to make of it. Must be a lot of bears if he is offering tours. Not sure if he is guaranteeing that you will see a Grizzly or not. May have to give him a call and take a tour.

That is kind of bizarre and I agree, I'm not sure what to make of it either. I Googled the phone number thinking it might be a joke and I see it belongs to Blaine Marr. Looks legitimate but something seems a bit strange about the entire undertaking.

I agree there are quite a few Grizzlies in the area. The most I have seen was 7 griz and one black. All within a half a section. You should have seen the black bear bolt once he spotted the sow and three cubs in the same field.  The fishy part to me is how are you going to give tours  and not guarantee seeing bears.

Let's hope this is him finally figuring out how to make a dollar off wildlife without jeopardizing the publics ability to access it!!!

There are a few big Grizzlies in the area right now. A couple of weekends ago we were branding and one of the neighbors showed up to let us know he had lost a donkey to a huge Grizzly bear. Fish & Wildlife came out, set up the trap and camera... they got a lot of pictures of the bear but he was too smart to enter the trap (he already had an ear tag).

Last weekend we were doing some more branding and the same neighbor shows up and he lost another donkey to a wolf.

I'm thinking about trying some donkey meat soon, it seems to be the preferred choice of carnivores.

The most I have seen in one day is 6, all within 10 kms of Beaver Mines. A sow and two cubs and three singles.

Exact same thing happened at my neighbors later on last fall. Ear tagged bear as well.

Make sure you report your bear sightings to the Alberta Grizzly Bear Survey!

Very few people from southern Alberta are reporting their sightings, lets change that this year.

Will do, and I will forward the link to a few of the ranchers in the area. Cheers, Mike

In 08 I hunted in Manitoba from the ground and while I think my outfitter was a little leery, he let me do it and it turned out well. For my Alberta hunt this coming spring, I asked my outfitter if he would allow it and he said no, he didn't want to take the chance that a grizzly may wander into one of his baits which apparently has happened on occasion. Probably a good thing. I'm not really sure what WMU he bear hunts out of.
Very interesting thread with some great picts - thanks to all for sharing.

If you are going to be around the Swan Hills area where your outfitter is from Ibow there is a definite possibility of a Grizzly visiting you. The Swan Hills area is notorious for Grizzly.

That's interesting. I'll have to keep my eyes open. Being from MI, I've of course never seen a Grizzly but I sure would like to - under the right circumstances.  :) Indeed when I mentioned it to my outfitter, he didn't hesitate with the "no" one bit.  ;)
Again, really interesting thread - thanks again to all who shared. The picts were great.

3 years ago I came across a set of grizzly tracks on the logging road south of Faust, which as the crow flies isn't all that far away from the Swan Hills. I also saw a whitetail back there with a rack so high that I first thought it was a caribou, but that's another story ;)

I have heard since that the boys made up the story and the evidence suggested that they killed the bear before it charged.  Any body know about this?
