That is a lot of bone.   :)
I got a glimpse into that country this summer and it is a massive expanse of untouched wilderness.
The Rogue River area produces some of the biggest moose on the continent.

Here is another Shockey Rogue River moose:

Yah I wish.. Unfortunately I can honestly say for sure out of all the moose I have been around or part of nothing has even come remotely close to any of these.

My boys and I have talked about one of these hunts a few times and I just don't know if I could ever justify the expense just to shoot horns. Moose hunting for us is something different, its about hunting. Yes of course the kill is important I wont lie,, its very important. The meat is also very important, we enjoy our moose meat immensely. I really don't know if I want to cheapin the experience to the point its just about the horns. Not saying anything is wrong with it,, if one is comfortable in spending the kind of money it takes to go on one of these hunts that's awesome.. I just don't know if it would be for me. Now if something even close to one of these were to come to one of my calls back in one of my moose haunts hey,, that would be the thrill of a lifetime and a real crown on my hunting career. But that's just it,, it would have to be us,, not some guide, not some $30,000.00 hunt it would have to be on one of our hunts. A person can do a lot of good in this world with that 30 grand and help people that need it,, not blow it on some big horns..

For me its always been about what we can accomplish out there not what some person can put me on. Oh I have dreams of someday going over to some countries and trying different hunts maybe just not sure. Its a personnel challenge for me, how can I do up against the game. Whether we go fishing or hunting its the same.. I always try and make it a do it yourself deal.

Just my thoughts on it.

Wow some great sets of antlers there!!

walleyes - come on man, hopefully I am not mis-interpretting your comment but just because someone goes on a guided hunt doesn't mean its only about the horns.  I just went on a guided hunt in Africa and it was about all kinds of new experiences that I was able to mix a little hunting in with.  Something that I would never be able to experience in Southern Alberta. The same is for most that hunt moose with outfitters here, they live in parts of the world where they could never have that experience.  Quite frankly man, you couldn't have the same experience in Alberta that you would have hunting moose with Jim Shockey or anybody else in the Yukon.  When was the last time you seen a mountain caribou or Dall sheep when scanning the boreal forest of Alberta.  I bet it would be a whole new experience for you and your sons that you would probably enjoy it very much.  Last year I went to Texas with my son for some whitetail and hog action with our bows, its was a great experience but definitely not about the horns.  We are doing it again this year.  I can hunt whitetails and pigs in Alberta but I guarantee it isn't the same experience as it is in Texas and it certainly isn't about the horns.  Anyway, if I misinterpreted your comment then sorry, but I for one, enjoy the different experiences that comes with hunting in new areas (outside Alberta). Unfortunately for most non-residents to hunt in Canada it has to be through an outfitter and for big $$.  Canadians, on the other hand, can hunt most states as a non-resident for just the price of a tag so our costs are fairly minimal.

Weste..

I certainly don't pass judgment on the motives of any hunter. People gather different experiences from hunting and its a personnel thing. Like I said I dream of going other places and hunt different game to me it would be the ultimate way to experience a country,, see it from the country. I was looking at this more from a moose hunt perspective. To me personally moose hunting has always been a hunter gatherer thing. Yes its about the kill and I would never turn away a nice set of antlers but its about the pursuit of the meat, the hunt, me and the boys. If I were to go on one of these hunts it would be for the horns, the trophy and that's it. I doubt they even bring all the meat out and if they did what would you do with all that meat in camp for a week or 10 days. Do they cut it up for you, can you age it on the bone like I like to. Probably none of the above. The meat is last on the agenda on these hunts. And for me I just don't know if I could accept that on a moose hunt. Now if I choose to go to Africa on a hunt well that's different. The local people make use of the meat, those hunts are done purely for the experience of the hunt and kill,, and again that's fine in that situation.

I really don't know,, I mean if one day my boys were to buy me a Jim Shockey moose hunt there is no way I could turn down the opportunity,, what hunter could. But I just don't know if it would be the same hunt for me as moose hunting is.

Alberta has a very large diversity of big game animals...........I need not venture any further to fill my hunting dreams.
