Just finished a big whitetail mount
« on: March 30, 2012, 01:01:04 PM »
Just got done another big whitetail mount last night.  Pictures make it look a little odd on a couple shots but I think it turned out better than the last.  Still needs to dry and get some paint on it but I think it will look good once done.  Buck scores somewhere in the 185-190 range.  The antler got shot off on the first shot and I have to glue it back on and patch it up.  That will be a challenge in itself.  Any thoughts good or bad are welcomed if you have any.  Got Drakes deer to do next for him that I helped him get a couple seasons ago.  Can't wait to get started on it.  I like this taxidermy thing.  Kinda fun!!! ;D

Looks like a great mount,  would like to see pics of it again once the antler is attached.

Yes it is a summer cape Justin.  The deer has been sitting in a garage for about 4 years and I did not have the original cape.  One of my taxidermist buddies had a spare cape for me and it was a real nice one.  I really like the early cape it has.  Tough to mount as it shows off any flaws real easy.
As for the antler I have to glue on and patch up the broken side as it was shot off on the first shot my buddy had at it.  Too bad, but I should be able to patch it up.

Never done one but I have the help I am sure I could do it.  Not sure if I want to as it is very time consuming and I would hate to screw it up.  Also the costs on them I imagine would be high just for the tanning and not sure if you would want to chance me wrecking it.  Deer on the other hand I hope to do a few every year for a few buddies and feel confident enough now I think I do o.k at them.  I have one other buddies to do hear in the next little bit and maybe next year will get a few more to do.  I have one more of mine own that I may do.  It only scores 166" so I am not sure about it yet or not but I may give it a go.

The problem is mostly the time and what is needed on a bear.  If it was just a head mount kind of thing then no big deal but with a rug I have to stretch it out cut it and sew it into shape and then sew the felt and liner on the back of it.  I wouldn't know how to even do a lot of it as I haven't done anything but head mounts yet.  It you had a deer to do I might take you up on the offer.
