Well we had one final day to hit the east country to chase mule deer around. We have had a total now of two days to hunt and one day to scout a totally new area to us. A friend was nice enough to show us a few places to check the day I scouted but other than that we went in pretty much blind. We had a pretty slow day on the season opener without seeing a buck in the zone we were hunting.
So today the four of us left Caroline at 5:30am. We thought things were going to be pretty productive when at first light we saw the first buck. A small 4x4 that the wife turned down. It was pretty slow then till lunch time other than seeing 6 head of moose.
Around lunch we saw a couple bucks but they were in an area that we couldn't hunt. We continued on seeing a total of around 30 mule deer over the next couple hours.
We found this buck at a distance off a gravel road as we travel to a new area to check out. We had a tough time finding where the owner of the land lived. I asked him if he would mind if the wife went in after the deer. He stated that they weren't letting anyone in this year and as we BSed for a bit and he said that if she really wanted to to go ahead and walk in.
We stalked about 400 yards across a hummock flat to a small knoll that we knew the deer were behind. The wind was good when we started but had switched 180deg and we just hoped the lay of the land would carry our smell above the deer. It was pretty noisy as we closed the last few yards. We jumped the deer at about 20 yards but they headed through some willows and when they came out at a slow run at 150yrds the wife let fly and the buck took a few 7mm-08 bullets before deciding to pile up(2:30pm).
We took some pics in the cold(-23) windy treeless pasture. After field dressing and loading the buck we headed back and thanked the land owner. There were at least 6 people at his house and they all came out to congratulate Mrs.sheep on here first mule deer buck.
Another great family trip and with a lot of "LUCK" and a little "SKILL" we were able to put another buck on the ground and some food on the table.
Gotta send a big thanks to MountainTi and also to the land owner for letting us in!
