Non Hound Cougar Season
« on: June 30, 2011, 08:22:39 AM »
Just curious on how many people are going to attemt to harvest cats in the zones with the new "Boot" season. And what are your thoughts in general on this season?
It does open some oppertunity I guess but its gunna be pretty tough to identify the sex of the cats and if they have young with them.

Lets hear your thoughts and ideas.

I havent seen the wording on the changes but may carry a tag if the oppurtunity arises.  I have had cougars come check me out while hunting deer.  I even had one come in to about 20 feet before I finally spooked him off.

What are the proposals for sex that you mention?

The changes are for a non hound season in zones 100-166, 200-210, 214-246, 250-260, 357-360, 500-504, 506, 508, 514 and 518-544.
There is no hound use allowed withing these zones and is no seperate "Boot" season within the CMA zones.

And as far as sex identification I guess I meant more for identifying if females have kittens. Pretty tough to tell in my opinion if a cat has kittens unless you identify the tracks or see the kittens.
If someone jumps a cougar or calls one in how sure can they be that that cat is alone.

Doesnt look like they are to worried about quotas on the non hound season but from what I heard at a meeting I was at they arent planning on seeing much of a harvest.

Just was curious on what others thing on if this season will actually work or if many cats will be harvested.

Unfortunately the zones I hunt in are not listed anyway.  I hunt on one guys place with the understanding that i will kill every bear i see as he hates the bears (haven't shot one yet and dont plan to) but he also wants me to whack cougars.  I actually had one hunt me one day on his place that I could have whacked but didn't as it was out of season.  I told him about it and he was VERY upset with me as he ranks cougars with bears.  With landowners being able to shoot cougars without a licence I see this tag working for me (oh right my WMU isnt one of the zones listed).

I need to fully understand the numbers on cougars to give an opinion but I believe that there wont be that many taken in this season.  With all the time I have spent in cougar territory (hunting, fishing and hiking) I gotta believe the harvest rate will be very low based on the number of encounters I have had on these trips.

I killed a cat when I was 14 or 15 in the porcupine hills.  I was Elk hunting at the time and had a late season cow draw.  The week previous we had found a couple cougar kills and seen tracks so when we went again the next week I bought a cougar tag and when I was creeping through the big pine forests I came up over a hill and there was a cougar standing there at about 50-70 yards.  Probably the luckiest thing ever but I got one.  The cat stayed in the same general area as where he had the kills and we had seen the tracks the week before.  Got my elk a couple days later and it was a trip I will remember forever.
