Off till Dec. 1st
« on: November 12, 2011, 05:57:40 AM »
It was a slow start with this dump of wet snow. Nothing moving under the stand except a pine martin.

I decided to take a walk for the afternoon and cut a few tracks but for the most part everything was held up. The trees were loaded with wet snow so it didn't take long to get soaked. Off to stand #2 this morning.

Nice pic DW. It's a rare occassion to see a PM. I've only ever seen 1 in the wild and it was gone before I had a chance for a picture.
G'luck on your hunt!

You must not bear hunt much TUC?  I see them a ton on bear baits in the areas I have hunted.  Not sure if that is the same for others or not but it is quite fun to see all of the different colors they have.  There are not too many with the same colors on them from what I have seen.  I really like the ones that have white feet and bright orange patches on them.  Been wanting one in the prime to mount for a long time.  Wish I could trap a few

me too DW!  well im actually not back to work till dec 4th....i wanted a couple extra days to deal with meat (and hopefully capes to the taxidermist) before i get back to it.  cool deal on the marten.  id like one too hanging in my house.  actually what im lookimg for is just a hide to hang around the teleposts in the basement.  i want one of everything....skunk, fox, coyote, fisher, marten...and a bunch of other furry beasts.  any trappers here willing to sell me some?
opinions are like sphincters......everyone has one, and they all stink!

Nube, I don't bear hunt at all. The neighbours kid is after me to go so maybe I'll buy a tag next year and shoot one for a rug. The kid is only 17 and I took him out this fall and he got his first WT. The other day I was in the garage butchering mine and he showed up with a rabbit he snared. I showed him how to make snares a couple days ago and where to set them and he nailed one his first night out. Of course he didn't know how to skin it.  ;D  so another lesson was learned.  I admire his enthusiasum for hunting, his Dad doesn't hunt so I take him out

Kind of reminds me of myself when I was his age.  :'(  lol

Awesome Tuc!!  It's fun teaching kids.  Some areas have a ton of Martens.  I guided for years 2 hours north of Fort Mac or more on the way to Fort Chip.  (gunslingers camp before he bought it)
There was a ton of Marten up there.  We kept busy on stands waiting for bears watching them come and grabing meat scraps.  Their favorite was beaver.  We had small 20gallon cans hung up in a tree with a small 4-5" hole in the bottom with the beaver in the can.  Sometimes the martens would go right inside the can.  It was funny because a few times a bear would come in while the marten was in the can and the bear would get scared to death with the marten fireing out of the can

It's been brutally slow nothing over 120". The first couple of days had nothing out of the stand which was alright cause I got off my but and into a cut block that looks promising. Spotted a couple of eight pointers crossing the block through the fog staggered by a couple of hundred yards on the trail of a doe and I bumped a couple of does an hour later on the other side of the block. Headed North on the 3rd morning hunting the poplars and again nothing out of the tree stand except a hunter. At noon I headed to my box blind and was happy to see a ton of tracks around it and sat in it for a couple of hours . I left with an hour of day light left and set my second t cam on a scrape that leads up to the blind. Sat on a pipe line until dark and had 2 4x4's and a fork horn cross. I'll be packing a lawn chair to that spot before the season ends. I hit a different stand this morning and had a doe under me within the first 15 minutes and a 1/2 hour later I had a goofy fork horn circle me for an hour and that was it. Came home early today to celebrate the Brides B day. Heading out to good stand tomorrow and expecting action all day :)

Hi Tuc although their elusive there are a fair # of martins around. I see te odd one out of the tree stand or booten er' across a logging road while driving. I've only ever saw one while hiking and I would have missed him if he would have climbed a pine instead of a poplar.

Holy crap it was freakin cold today. I sat in the moose box this morning with a little colemen heater blasting and had a pretty decent white tail walk 40 yrds in front of it. He had it all except double digit tine length so I let him walk, good thing he didn't come back again cause I probably couldn't pass him up twice. Other than him all that came by before and after was a couple of dinks. I would have had some great pics of him but my camera froze up on me. I usually have gotten on to 5 or 6 hot does by now but have hardly seen any does???? Didn't think we had that tough of  a winter up hear last year. At around 2:00 I decided to go for a cruise and the critters were moving hard to stay warm. Saw  10 mulie does a decent moose and could have did the road warrior thing on 6x6 elk but passed.

Lot's of nice buck's posted on the forum so far, congrats guy's. I spent Mon. - Wed. doing the road warrior thing with my bro on a few of our favorite logging roads. Saw lots of does a few small bucks and a glimpse of a decent buck. I needed a break from that and sat on stand in the morning and the moose box for the afternoon. The morning was a little slow but I managed to rattle a little buck in and a pretty decent 5x5 in the afternoon. The 10 pointer had everything I was looking for with decent mass and double digit g2's and g3's except he had a broken right g4. The Boy's thought I was nuts for passing him up but oh well.

I'm getting to like this guy, every time he shows up I see a decent buck shortly after

Sorry for the blury pic but this guy is a nice buck

My Bro was up from BC and closed his tag on nice 4x4 on his last day. One of his toughest seasons up here with low buck sightings.

Well it's getting down to crunch time so I sat in one of my best stands this morning for the day. A 1/2 hour in I spotted a doe with twin fawns and was hoping a buck wasn't to far behind. I cut some decent deer tracks on the hike in so the anticipation was there. A couple of hours later a button buck showed up and browsed a little and dissappeared. An hour later he showed up again and bedded behind my stand. It was an agonizing 1 1/2 before he left as I didn't budge in fear of spooking him. I couldn't figure out why it was so quiet around my stand, usually if the wolves were around I would have seen their tracks on the road on the way in. At around 3:30 I heard a squirrel chirping to my West so I was expecting a deer to show up shortly, unfortunately it was Buttons again. He started browsing briefly, jerked his head up and bolted with this guy following him. Now I know why the action was so slow today.

I sure wish we had the non hound November season here.

Absolutely, always kicking them out of the bear baits.  I always want to skewer one with an arrow but I would have to get a trapper's licence etc.  LOL  They are pretty cool to watch and can very entertaining when sitting on stand.
