Well, Gotta love opening day in 305. Put about 150 elk to bed on the eve of opening day about 1.5 miles form the nearest road. Got up early, hiked the 2 miles to the trees in the dark and patiently waited for daylight to come. Anyway, the elk did not get the memo on where they were supposed to be at daybreak and decided to still be near the road at legal light. Needless to say, the road hunters started blasting from the road as soon as they could. Actually watched one guy lethally shoot a bull and then have another guy shoot it while it was struggling to get up. After some yelling and nearly getting punched the second guy put his tag on it. The first guy ended up calling the CO who arrived to sort it out. Apparently they give the elk to the last person who puts a bullet in the animal. Reminded me why I rarely go out for opening day and why I enjoy the solitude of hunting during the archery season. As you can guess, I was not able to shoot a bull out of the ball of elk that ran by me a few minutes later. There were 24 legal bulls in the herd but due to the road show blasting, only 2 were harvested.
