Pothole Ducks
« on: May 20, 2011, 02:51:28 PM »
looks like there should be a good crop of waterfowl this year.  every low spot on the prairie is a puddle right now, and every one is loaded with birds.

Bambi, Great Pics.  Good looking ducks.  Got any more?  The Canvasbacks are my favorite.

The first and the last pictures are of pintail drakes.  Dale is teaching me how to post pictures, so more should be coming right away.

Great pics Dale & Robin.   Which one is that Nube??? Is it the last pic?
Red Head and white body
Last pic is a Ruddy duck.  Kind of neat with the blue bill but nothing I want on my wall.

Dale says thanks.  He has been snapping pictures at work the last week.  He says he would get more if it wasn't so hard to stop a 60 ton B-train.  He is telling me the names of all these ducks, but I can't make sense of it.  He has a few more on the camera that he will put up I'm sure.  He has one that even he doesn't know the name of.  Maybe someone here will recognize it?

the other day i got a pm asking if the pics posted earlier are in fact of canvasbacks or redheads.  well, they are canvasbacks for sure.  the redheads in spring will look similar, but have a more grayish back and a more rounded head with a tipped bill.

youve seen the canvasback, and today i caught up to a redhead in a good spot for pics.  this guy and his lady duck friend were at the college pond in medicine hat.

and in a rare stroke of luck, i managed to get the two cousins in the same frame.

Dale, yes it is a Grebe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Little_Grebe_(Tachybaptus_ruficollis)-_Breeding_plumage_W2_IMG_8770.jpg

There are a ton of different types of Grebes.  I don't know much about them at all.  I belive they are a protected birds though.
I love the Redheads.  I have a great spot I can shoot piles of them off of a big lake.  We have killed a few banded ones.  They do look a little like the Canvasback but the head shape and body color give it away easily.  Great pics.  Keep them coming if you find a few other species out there.

After seeing birds in January there is no way a bird in an Alberta season is worth mounting unless you get one in December and it might be good enough.  Our birds really don't have time to grow the feathers out I don't think.  I find most Divers head south real fast as well so they are a bit hard to find late.

i havent been out as much the last week and a half, but the times i have, ive seen a few species not represented in this thread.  i hope to get a few more, but if anyone else has some pics, by all means throw em up.

incidentally nube, the first duck i ever shot was a drake canvasback.  he didnt have those colors though and i needed the chart to identify it.

We have shot a few of them over the years at camp but like you said the first time or 2 it takes a bit to figure out what they are.  Even the Redheads we shoot in the one spot I have that are fully colored are not even close to a late bird in January in the U.S.  We just don't keep the birds around here long enough to get real good feather.  They might get it by December but the fact is that most birds are gone by then.
I hope to add a few more this year to the wall.
Ducky, said it before that I could use a guide this fall.  HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
