The draw is all over the radio. Maybe the news should be all over the miss management of resources.

They saw those but they are tightly managing hunting within a kilometer of the highway this week. Had a few good chances as a bunch of cows are back in bounds but had some bad breaks due to competition from other guys. I think guys with tags next week will do just fine, getting close is the hard part. One more day but I can't go help, hoping they finally get a chance for an ethical shot. Just the way it works sometimes, beautiful weather this week either way.

I was told today you have to be 75yards inside the fence to shoot to the east which is away from the  Hiway.  There was probably 500 elk along that stretch of hiway late this afternoon. If u talk to them they can go north on Rattlesnake, West on Dugway,(which is southern boundary). And then North again on Harvie Road and they will be 1 km from the hiway. Range control is monitoring closely but more than willing to help. Hope they close the deal.

Yeah, appreciate the tip but they ended up designating us the north "escape route" within the buffer and the elk were coming but then headed straight south due to a cross country pickup truck. Had one chance but any shot would have wounded multiple animals. By the time we cut all the way around the elk made it into a small out of bounds area on the south end. Had lots of chances and range patrol did a great job (really great guys out there) but it just didn't come together on that herd. We ended up spending a good part of the day tracking one that was wounded by other hunters as  but never caught up with it. Felt trying to dispatch an already doomed one was better than trying to hit more healthy animals. Did see another herd inbounds in the middle of the block on the way out but i had to get back to town for an appointment. Felt bad as there were no other hunters in sight, would have been a great place to sneak in nice and close. If anyone is heading out next week have fun, be safe, and don't rush you're shots. They really need dead elk, not wounded crippled elk.

I spent a whole half a day ,because I can , trying to find out whom authorized the native cull
Giving it priority over the Draw tag cull ...not the ESRD , army won't talk about , Feds claim
No knowledge . But this isn't hunting it's culling and as such , the powers do not want horn
Hunting , just shooting and removing .  Eradication is the word . Enjoy the cow cull .
It isn't the elimination of these animals that bothers me . It's once again the guys paying the bills
Go to the back of the bus .

The one thing I'm sure of ,in light of our world war situation ,if this was an American army base
Hunters wouldn't be allowed anywhere near it .....so I guess ? Be greatful

When does a cull start becoming harassment of wildlife?

Have some friends who have just filled their tags at the base and it is a gong show down there. Also many of the native hunters are just cutting off the antlers and leaving the rest to waste on the ground.

Hi all,
New to the forum but definetly not new to elk hunting in Alberta and like the rest of us resident hunters I certainly have an issue with what went on and is by the sounds of it still going on at the base with FN's hammering trophy elk that the rest of us taxpaying, permit waiting, licensed hunters would have been happy to part with time and money to get one of them hogs !
Sent an email of protest to Gary Wilyman and like noted by a previous post nobody in government so far will take any responsibility. Here is his office's response

"Thank you for the response.  This office is attempting to get some answers as to how this travesty came about and will issue a press release when we have further information."

G.A.(Gary) Wilyman

OFFICE OF RICK STRANKMAN, MLA for

DRUMHELLER/STETTLER CONSTITUENCY

Me and a buddy did get drawn for the cow hunt coming up and hope to fill the freezer with some quality meat. Sounds like it could be a challenge with all the pressure and can't get any information any information about how the hunt is carried out, guess we will find out Monday.

Managed to fill my tag yesterday, ours was I believe the 10th one of the day to check in.  Certain there were more after us as other hunters had found the cow herds and on our way out we saw guys stalking them.
I think there were only 2 or 3 bull hunters there, no idea of they connected or not.  Saw 2 herds of nice bulls, tons of antelope.

If you were lucky enough to get drawn for Feb., perseverance pays off, just keep spotting till you find them.
