Second Elk Rut
« on: October 08, 2012, 10:23:32 AM »
In the process of setting up my last deer blind for the November deer hunt and I bumped into a heard of elk. Nine cows with a decent 6x6 bull. I believe the second ruts fireing up. It was October 14th a few years back that I heard one of the most aggressive elk bugling sessions and I didn't have a bugle. Kinda wish i still had an elk tag, it's not very often that I actually drive up on a legal elk with my truck. Wasn't quick enough with the camera, sorry no pics.

That's good to hear hopefully things pick up a bit in my hunting area as well.  Put a bit of time in this weekend and only saw one bull that wasn't interested in my cow calls at all.  Caught another smaller one on the trail camera last week and judging by the sign they are just interested in going back and forth from bed to food.  Did a bit of exploring in a few places they make pitstops trying to find some active elk but no go.  Looks like they just hit break time for a bit.  Hope to get out on some after work hunts and cut one off.

Haven't herd a single bugle this year hopefully the second rut they pipe up a bit and get a little more responsive to the calls.  I don't know why they have been so quiet and shy.  Been running into them fairly steady mostly by sheer chance but not really calling any in.  No wolves or high hunting pressure.  Been a little warmer I guess but can't really say I've ever bought that theory.  I've heard them bugle when the daytime highs were pushing thirty on more than one occasion.

Usually when the bulls get quiet it means that the predators are close by.

Called in today by my buddy, same area we hunted weekend before last when it was hot, nothing was moving, also had a smaller bull prancing around the field chasing 3 whitetail does around with his tounge hanging out. Not a huge bull but a full freezer
