It certainly has become an obsession the past few years for sure. I haven't been hiking up and down the coulees the past few weeks simply for the benefit of the dog.  ;D

Yes it seem that we all get the bug.I am getting a new titanium gun and a few other goodies. I shot my first sheep last year on closing day with my bow @ 20 yards. What a way to get the heart going.I bet people in the next two mountains herd me when I finally walked up and held my first ram.I was and still am pumped. So I have to sit out for a ram so I am going to go draw a ewe tag so I can try out all my new gear.I also plan on taking my wife in on the 2 nice ones i found in a spot for the opener.

She looks might close to not being legal with that pic there Justin.  Do you have some more pics of your hunt and a story?  Congrats on your 1st.  They get easier after the first.  It will be your favorite ram for the rest of your life no matter how many you have or how big the others end up as well.

Holy cow man!!!  I would say you got the lucky horseshoe on that one.  I don't think i could have pulled the trigger on that one.  Glad it worked out for you.  Congrats again.

if you can justin, put up the one side shot at 10 yards that was the clincher.  you know where the angle is perfect and you can lay a credit card on it and see.

im with you nube.....i have even held those horns in my hand and there just is no way i would have shot.  ive seen the plug though and it is legit.

and justin....arent you glad i told you all about mine.  i only wish i had my bow when my ram was under 20 yards for half an hour.  heck, i had to let him back up so the mount didnt show powder burns.  of course i only let him get to 100.....not 600........roflmao

I am still waiting to shoot one. I have come onto a couple but they were too close to pull the trigger.

Glad it worked out and it's nice you tried to get a bigger one.  To me he looks 1/2" -1" short.  I imagine you are only showing us the one side as the other is shorter?  In the end he got the plug.  If you would have skinned him out before he got into the fish cops i would have really been surprised that they plugged him.  I had a buddy with one bigger than this one and he lost it because the ram was skinned and the fish cop went by the eye socket and not the eyeball.  He never got fined but they took the ram and left him the meat.  Didn't make sense.  The fish cop called it shy by 1/16" on the eye socket.  What a load of crap.
You are right though, the feeling on the first is better than loosing your virginity!  Well, maybe not!!

Not a big deal for my buddy.  He has shot a few of them and because of the one that got taken away he got to keep the meat on it and never got fined.  He actually went called Ken Nowicky the lawyer and talked to him about it.  Ken said it would cost $2K in his fees but he was sure he could get it back.  The ram that got taken was totally legal or they would have taken his license away and fined him and they did not.  The fish cop who I know is a dick and wanted to flex his muscle.  He won as it was not worth spending $2K to prove him wrong for a small ram.
Nice you could be close enough to study him up and take your time on him.

I can see where JC's ram makes it. His base starts well forward compared to other sheep.
This guy doesn't quite make it, but if his bases were like JC's, he would be on somebodies wall right now.

Based on the right side, would have left it. Left side? It is close I think, but hard to tell from pictures. You did the right thing by walking away. He'll look good in a couple years.

Right side short for sure.  left side I would say normally it would probably pass if it had a tighter curl.  This ram looks like a K country ram with loopy horns and liek Mountain Ti said it might be close but with the loopy horns I think you did good by passing.  on the close ones you relly have to pay attention to the horn shape.  Also if it is real close just cross your fingers like Justin did and hope to heck you get an officer that got lucky that morning with his wife adn is in a good mood!

mamba, i suspect that ram is likely legal....but from the pics you posted there is no way id shoot.  if you arent 100% sure, it just aint worth the risk....so i say good decision.

Yeah it was a tough decision , and I know in my mind this ram was legal , but I love hunting to much to risk it ... So he lives for me to harvest him this year , and I cant wait cause he is a big loopy bugger that has great potential ...

I know I would not pull the trigger on any of the rams on this thread. I just don't have enough experience to make a close decision like these.

I know these pictures are not the best but this is the guy i watched for a couple hours and he wouldn't give me a view of his ohter side so I hiked another fours hours the next day to get another look at him and decided he was too close for me.

His left side I would bet was an easy legal.  Look how much it curls up in that first pic.  His right side i don't think curls up near as much and has way less length.  Tough call with those pics
