Slim pickin' chicken
« on: October 03, 2019, 09:30:36 PM »
Good grief where did all the chickens go?

Been out five times to our favourite spots and only got two birds. (seen 3 flyers)

Maybe I didn't leave enough for seed last fall. :-\

Numbers are down and have been dropping for about 3 years in the areas I travel to.  Have a pard in Hinton with dogs and he is still getting good finds.

15:00 to 17:00 is historically the most best times to find feeding birds.

Grouse of course are where you find them but a good rule is if you can’t get your boots wet within 500m you are in the wrong spot.  Most other tips are BS.

On another note had a fella show me why grouse should be cooked and then cooked a little more.  They are full of worms.

Are the bunnies down also? As I recall there was some sort of a correlation between bunnies, grouse, and lynx. I never saw the actual research done, so this might be just another myth.

Must be due to climate change. ;D ;)

I would say that I have never seen the bunny plague that gets talked about as in hundreds crossing roads and such.

In my experience they tend to stay the same they are around.

I did hear that after Hugh died the bunny’s did take a hit, but not sure the grouse had much to do with it. :) Was South of Whitecourt the last few days, only seen 4, all very jumpy.

Hi Speckle. Question.

You mentioned a Sharptail second hatch.

Were those Sharptail's on the border of boreal subalpine forest?

The reason I am asking you this question is you might remember some fellow doing a post graduate degree on the movement of Sharptail from a prairie and aspen environment to boreal subalpine area's. Sort of interesting.

Sort of like whitetail moving into the Hinton area over the years.  And that happened before the great climate change where the sky is falling. :)

The first place that I spotted Sharp tails was by the Obed tower 30 years ago in old cut blocks. Since then they have spread out, but just about every time I see them it is old cut blocks that have started to grow back.

Sharptail off of Obed. That is proof of dispersal. Before Global Warming.

Now what about the Hungarian (grey partridge)?  How far west and north are they making their home.

The grey partridge was released into the Peace area around Grande Prairie years ago. Unconfirmed siting's of these little rascals occur all into the Land of the Mighty Peace.  Apparently an excellent place to look and verify for these little guys is around the Fountain Tire in Peace River.
