The Alberta Pheasant Season
« on: August 30, 2015, 02:06:21 PM »

On paper it looks fantastic . I got a call from a buddy in Manitoba
Pointing out , the amount of Area , the time span Sept 1 to Jan 15.
I think I broke his heart ,all geared to go roostering here over Xmas .
I told him .....you might get a wild rooster in the WMU s open from
    Oct 15 to Nov 30 .......but good luck in the 400 s ,300,s  even the 200 s .
I'm good with the Huns  after Xmas ....

It's a little ludicrous that the ESRD after their lack of effort in habitat ,
Stocking etc. to have the balls to extend the season on the birds we
     Have left ....
Ive invited  Shannon Phillips to be my guest at the taber pheasant
Festival . We shall see .

Used to start hunting Huns about mid October no point in shooting chicks with pin featheres.

Used to only take a couple out of a covey and not push them to hard.

Season should run October 15th to Dec 15th.

Bet this was a wonderful fish and game idea.

me and the pards have 5 dogs combined in our late 20s to early 30s maybe we should start wiping out whole coveys?

Exuse me for my ignorance, but there is no great love in my life towards Pheasent in this province. I have nothing againts the bird just the attention it gets instead of some of our native species.

They have been trying to get this bird established in this country for over a 100 years now wth no success,, its a put and take operation. How much money and how much time has been put into these birds, a non native bird. If just a fraction of this money and effort were put into our own Sage grouse a bird designed to live in this province i am convinced we would have a viable population going. Just think about the millions of dollars, hatcheries, public funded dollars that has been sucked up in these birds..

Again,, you can not tell me that if this time and money went into the Sage grouse they wouldnt be doing well.

Sorry again,, but when i think about it, it kind of gets me going. We should be looking after our own before some foriegn species ( this goes for more than birds in this country but thats a different topic)

Damn ditch birds..

There used to be rose bushes
There used to be cover on canals
Ditches used to have cover

My dad has pictures you would have to see to believe from the 70s.

Drowned rats that can hardly fly from a hatchery no thanks.  Even a lab could run fast enough to catch them after they muster a 200m flight.

the majestic pheasant...

perhaps they heard Walleyes and the extended seasons is a way to eliminate the introduced birds from zones that could impact our native species (ruffies and spruce??).  Anyway I am definitely seeing more pheasant and huns around my place the last few years.  Accidentally mowed a pheasant nest in my back yard this year.

First Weste can I come to your house.  Lol

Walleyes I agree with you totally ,enhance habitat for native birds . More sharpies .

   Enhance habitat period .

But this obsession with ditch parrots is very strong here ...

The answer is obvious , but the willingness is not .

You can come by but my wife has declared our house/yard a wildlife sanctuary - and even i am not willing to test that one!!  lol  She knows where the guns are and how to use them!   :o

I have been leaving areas for them to have cover around the house and its been working.  When we first built 6 years ago we would only see the occasional hun in the winter, now we see pheasants and huns all year round (although sightings are still higher once the crops come off the surrounding fields).  Its the second nest that that I have accidentally destroyed in the last 2 years.  I am glad it is helping.
