The state of the whitetail population
« on: April 26, 2016, 03:31:20 PM »
With the easy winter hows the deer population out there for you more rural guys? Hoping for a recovery eventually, hoping they do away with supplemental tags one day, not optimistic though. It's been so bad the past few years don't even feel like going out anymore.

They seem to be doing well around here. Lots been running through the front 40 over spring. Been out and about in the bush quite a bit this spring and no sign of dead animals like we saw a couple winters ago. I am hopefull for a good fawn crop this spring all looks good.

Whitetails still on the low side in Strathcona county east.  More mulies than whitetails now.

Tons of whitetails out west though.  I saw over a hundred in a day out by Shiningbank.

Ton's in the Calahoo area, also lots of Grouse. And more Moose then I have seen in years. This area is getting built up with subdivision though, so not much hunting, and there was zero snow in the fields this winter, so food was good. And agree Paul, do away with extra tags. Also if I rambling on, the Robins are thicker then flies this spring.

I have been seeing a lot of them so far this spring.  It seems that they wintered very well, and we should have an excellent fawn crop in the LLB area.

The added activity with installation of electrical generating windmills has all but chased every whitetail out of the area.

It's going to take more than one easy winter to bring populations back

Yes but last winter was a pretty good winter for them so we had a decent fawn crop now add this winter with very low mortality rate and we are seeing good numbers out and about. So a couple good winters like we have had makes a huge difference.

Feels like I've had to hit the brakes for deer more this spring than the last two years combined.  Numbers have definately improved in west central.  Thinking it will be another good winter or two before there is good numbers of mature bucks around though.

The Deer numbers are holding about the same in our area. The black tongue in the area a couple years ago really hit the whitetail and antelope populations. Antelope numbers still aren't that great either.
