Weird little elk down
« on: November 20, 2012, 09:41:50 PM »
Sittin in the blind this morning waiting for Bambi's dad to happen by and a herd of elk decided to bed down around 50 yards from me.  Didn't see any bulls at first but had heard some crunching behind me after the cows had settled in. Just my luck that side of the blind was closed pretty tight due to the wind and snow.  Eased the zipper open and lo and behold this guy is just bedding down.  I had a great laneway to the boiler room so I shot him right there, he stood up and stumbled back and forth a bit.  I knew he was done but gave him one more just to be sure.  Funny thing I found both bullets 2 inches apart on the far side against the hide.

Have to say I am impressed with the Speer Deep Curl bullets so far.  First off if I do my part a three shot group will touch each other at 100 yards.  Second with a close shot at an elk out of a 7mm the bullets held together very nicely and as advertised the core is still fused to the jacket.  90% weight retention according the scale.

He'll be tender fiddles Shrubs.

Talking about bedding down close. A couple of weeks ago I was in my blind hunting WT's and a cow and bull moose bed down not 25 yards or so to my left. The cow bedded first and I  played with the young bull for awhile. For the sake of him he could never find that other cow calling to him. He diid everything but look up. He finally tired and laid down along side the cow. I thought when I climbed down out of the blind it would spook them but they didn't seem to be too concerned. No wonder they call them swamp donkeys!
