Any super die hard perch ice fisherman here?

In the winter all I have on my brain is jumbo perch.  Big ones, 12 inches and up!  Anyone else have the same sickness?

I think we all dream about jumbo perch, I know I do.  I did one special trip this winter to a rather remote lake in the bitter cold and deep snow to target them specifically.  We did alright but they were biting only fair.  Seen some real jumbos though.

Here was my personal catch that day.

I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Dace, you need to come up north for a jumbo trip for sure.  I think I am going to get a couple sleds just for hitting the ice all winter to get into some really out of the way places.  I do own flyrods, a few nice ones too that have been hibernating for quite a while.  I think the last time they got a workout was on a trip to the Elk river in BC in 2008.  I am definately in for a trip to hit up some great rivers and streams.  I love nymphing in moving water!

nice pic. rub it in. nevermind the bobber fishing, you can drown a leech under a bobber all day long out of your boat for eyes. we'll get you into floating some big foam flys in shallow chop for some nice browns. they attack those bugs off the surface so vicious, it's sure to get your blood pumping.

I like cleaning up in a pool, not just picking off the easy ones!  I will take your word and resist the urge to nymph.  I would love to smash some agressive browns!

I know where to get treatment!  It's off the beaten path, way in the bush, and you can't drive a truck in there.  You need to take a trip at least two times a week from December to March, and throw in a few in early April too.  As soon as ice comes off the lakes however, you will be longing to sit on the ice again!

Nothing better in the winter then going out all day on a weekend and hunting for them big jumbo perch then head back to town and get ready for the beer leagues hockey game. After that head to the local pub to hit up some beer and wings with the hockey boys. Head home and get to bed so you can get up and do it all over again the next day.

Cross Lake on saturday was ok for perch but location and technique is key for catching the bigger ones. Caught lots of dinker perch and in the late afternoon the bigger ones started to bite. This lake is quite busy. F & W C.O. has told me that the highest numbers for vechiles is 135.
Here is a couple of photos.
  Cheers.....

Was at Cross on Saturday as well.  A few rumours of some big perch there and the swarms of people started fishing it.  I had 6 kids and my dad there most of the day.  Caught 20-25 between us all.  Kept maybe 10 of them worth keeping and 2 of them were decent sized.  It was hard for the kids to catch them.  Very light bites.  Tried all kinds of hooks and maggots, meal worms and minnows with not much luck.  Was kind of dissapointed as I wanted to get into them real good with the kids.

A common problem in Alberta.

"Hey so and so lake is putting out loads of nice perch"

A week later everyone and their dog is out there.

First fish I ever caught sight fishing was a fat humpy perch. When I was growing up, went to a lot of out-of-the-way backwoods lakes with the old man and I can remember catching perch that were huge.  Haven't been out for the perch like that in a long long time, and the guys I fish with can't really be bothered to go after them.   Really sucks cause were setup to get out to the out of the way places that you would find them at, but no one wants to go with me... :( :'(

First, thanks to the friend who told me today about this forum!

Yes, I am addicted to perch. Gorgeous stripey colorful little buddies! I luv 'em. When I am not tempting them to bite I am thinking about them. When I am not thinking about them I am making gear and tools to catch them. When it's summer I am waiting for winter again to get on the ice. I don't know why I love perch so much but it likely stems from childhood when I saw little fish in a farm pond which were likely perch. Wish there were more perch in the world.  :)
I hate preventable equipment malfunctions.
