perch netting
« on: April 30, 2012, 02:47:46 PM »
For the members of this forum who haven’t seen the Lake Sundance perch netting photos on another forum, this thread will explain what the community has been doing…Ten to twelve years ago, perch were illegally introduced into Lake Sundance located in Calgary…Over the years the perch population grew to the point that the perch became stunted (limited food) between 4-6 inches long…A netting program was introduced by Sundancefisher (member of a few forums including AS) and people from the community volunteered to install and remove the nets…
Some other info:
-   Netting started 2009
-   Over 60,000 perch removed from the lake
-   Each year there has been significant grow in the perch length due to more food
-   Forum members are asked/invited to join in process and are allowed to take as many perch home with them as they like…People that take perch home are issued a bill of lading from Lake Sundance to their home.
-   Transportation of live perch is a punishable offense, so we bonk perch on the head

The first netting of perch took place April 28th and the results were good...Many large 10 to 12 inch perch were taken home by everyone with around 1000 perch netted... If any other members would like to join us, pm me or reply to this thread, we will be pulling the nets again Saturday May 5th at 1:00 and bring a bonking stick!...

Bonking and placing in piles of ten

Lots of big ones this year

I found this video about netting perch in Lake Sundance...It shows the Fike net that we use, the perch caught and resetting the nets...

Me too ... That is so awesome! Still hoping to get down there some time to meet the good folks at Sundance and catch some of those perchies!
I hate preventable equipment malfunctions.

Be pretty cool to go check out for sure. Hope to venture down with one of our members that has opened an invitation one of these days when my days off work with the netting. May even get out with him one day just to fish it.

The thing is unless you are part of the netting team you will not be fishing that lake.  You can only access all lakes in Calgary other that carburn and glenmore res only with a resident of the community of which the lake is in.

Justin....I take people from the forums in to fish all the time...In winter we have had over 50 people (ice fishing) in from other forums...SG was in Calgary and we were planning on fishing (and tipping back a few) but it rained everyday....Netting is a way that I have met many people from forums and from these meetings, I have fished many other areas in Alberta with these people...All it takes is a pm from members asking to fish Sundance...I can take 2 people at a time, book a boat and there is no limit on perch!...

You bet...Just PM me...The netting is pretty good also, you can get lots of perch to take home...One time last year there was only 4 of us and I took 3 garbage bags of perch home....I filleted until 1:00 am and had 15 pounds of perch fillets then gave it to family and neighbours...My one neighbour even started to fish for the perch after eating it...
