RedDeer Gun Show
« on: May 04, 2013, 04:13:23 PM »

So I have been looking to get a walk around/calling rifle for coyote and fox.  Something in .222 or .223.  Then the new Winchester Super Magnum
Caught my eye and I figured I may wait till the new Savage B-MAG came out in that cartridge.

I saw some pictures and read some reviews on the CZ 527 Carbine in .223 and fell in love.  So I was looking all over to get one.

Went to the RedDeer gun show today and was tempted by a BRNO Fox in .223 and also a Rem 788 in .222 with a nice scope on it.  But I kept my cash in my pocket.

I had heard that UFA in RedDeer was going out of the sporting goods area so I stopped in there on my way home.  There on the rack were two CZ 527s.  Not the Carbine but one was a synthetic in .223 and the other a nice looking LUZ in .222.  I bought the wood stocked .222.  Got rings for it and now I have to steel a scope from one of my other rifles and take it out and shoot it.

On the way home I stopped at a fund raiser garage sale in Condor and got a real deal on some chocolate chip cookies.

Yes they are selling it all off.  I got 15% off the rifle and rings.

The reason for getting out of Sporting goods is they are supposed to be building an actual Wholesale Sports in Red Deer according to the rep I talked to in March.

Another sporting goods store in RedDeer (like a new Wholesale) would be good for us as it makes for competition which should bring prices down for the consumer.  But the flip side is it could drive the smaller stores out of the market and I always enjoy the friendly atmosphere and personal touch of a smaller store.

I could care less about buying cheaper and when I do I don't buy in this country anyway.  I would rather feed family's than a big box store Edmonton and calgary are close enough in the off chance was has something I want.

I don't mind supporting wholesale as at least they are a Canadian company but not into Bass Pro or Cabbelas much,, fun to go look at but I spend minimum amounts there.. I do buy the odd thing but not much. Like jimmy I try my best to support the local shops. Without a doubt they get the bulk of my spending, I really don't mind spending a little more locally as long as its in reason say 10 - 15% more I don't mind.

I sent an e-mail to UFA asking them why they were getting out of sporting goods at the RedDeer store.

Thank you for your email and for bringing forward your concern....

UFA has made a Business decision not to carry the hunting, fishing and camping products, but will be focusing more attention on the AgriBusiness at the Red Deer Farm Store.

Wholesale Sports will be our primary carrier of the hunting, fishing and camping products.

As a matter of fact, Whole Sale Sports is offering a wild card for UFA members, which will give them a 10% discount on regular priced merchandise, with the exception of fire arms, ammunition and electronics, which is a 5% discount.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

As a UFA member, I'm glad they are getting out of that business. Sounds like a great business decision. It's not their core business and it showed. The only hunting/fishing gear I've ever bought there was during the close out sale. Everything else was overpriced at best. There's lots of other options in Red Deer and area.
