2012 Alberta Hunting Draws
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:05:39 PM »
Well spring is here soon it will be time to put in for Alberta hunting draws. So what is everyone planning to put in for this year and what priority are you at?

Moose Calling Season Priority 2

Mule Deer think I'm a 3

Antelope 999 think I'm a 7. Me and my dad were trying to get a partner hunt for a few years and never scored, now that he's gone don't feel much like going this year.

Will be putting in one of the boys for our moose draw, not sure which one we will see if they can all come this year or not. The middle boy is up to priority 3 or 4 I beleive then the youngest is at 2 now so no sweat there for us. Then I will just 999 everything else for this year. The 2 older boys are at about  priority 8 on their cow Elk draws we are just waiting until our Muley draws get up a bit then we are going for a Peace River area Mule deer  bull/cow Elk combo hunt. I have the land owner lined up already. That one is probably 2 or 3 years away but we are planning for it already.

Heard a rumor of possibly no antelope season this year. But either way I'll 999 mine.
I'll be putting in for prairie moose, I'm priority 9 now so should get as well as a buddy of mine and will be using my bow. The other one that I'm a possibility on is WMU 300 late season bull elk.
Going to get back into archery alot this year and Not big into draws this year as my boy can hunt now so him and I are going to go for sheep as much as we can as long as work isn't to retarded busy then plus we found a 350 class elk late last fall and my boy said we are going to get him this year so we will take time for that as well.
I hunt sheep to see over the next mountain not to measure the next trophy!

This year I am at:

Antlerless Elk Priority 5

Antlered Moose Priority 2

I should get the Antlerless Elk in 507 and we have them figured out in there.  I helped my younger brother Duane get his cow there last fall. Might even be a bull in the cards.
If I get the bull moose tag it will be a breeze.  We saw a ton of them last fall.  Whitetail hunt goes without saying too.
I hope chicken hunting is better this fall.
Will be 999ing on antlered mule deer.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

We're really torn.  Our plan Was to have a quiet year, do the m/l deer season locally, some migratory to fill out the fall.

Now we're just not sure.  I can't get an answer from srd about the m/l seasons so I'm assuming they no longer exist.  (wouldn't want to take a few days out of the trophy bow hunters 5 month general tag season would we?   >:(  )  (that's right, we're not all trophy bow hunters.   :)  )   Add to that it's looking like drought here so migratory might be pretty thin locally.

Thought about Wainwright but wife doesn't have the priority yet and son didn't sound too interested, he's planning an elk hunt with a buddy.

Been looking through the reg/draw books and google earth.  Wife's just not ready for an elk hunt and doesn't want to hunt in the hills.  Wife would like go boreal on a 2 week camping/fishing trip/WT hunt;  we'll see, we may do that.  Maybe I'll just take the wife up N, set up a bear bait and sleep under a tree.

Was real excited, guess I've just gotta keep looking until lightning strikes again.   :)

Suffield for me I think with Priority 10.  Last season of the year as well.  Fingers crossed.  Might need some help if you guys know where the elk like to hang and want to slip me some info.  I have clients from Sept 2-October 17 this year and only have about 5-6 days to sheep hunt.  Not sure if I will make it out or not.  Got 2 of my buddies sheep last year so I don't have anyone to take so it will be nice to do a solo hunt if i get out.  Got my trip to Africa for 2.5 weeks in August so I won't have much time and doubt I will get out much for deer even especially if I do get out for sheep.

My priority isn't very high, but I'm working my way towards 406 ewe. That would be a really cool hunt I think.
Other than that just 999 for when I have time.

One thing I have to start putting in for is moose in 314. I just got access to a huge piece of land just outside of Cochrane.
Quote from Howard Hill.( Whenever he taught someone to shoot) "Son make up your mind right now if you want to target shoot or hunt as theres a world of differance between the two"

Hope this goes over well....

I just got put pencil to paper, and decide what I want on my wall this year! Only got 2 days last year for myself. I helped my buddy have a career year, so now it his turn to help!

I have enough priority to draw ever tag Alberta has to offer, that isn't a lottery! From moose to turkey! Just gotta gotta make a decision!

I am a P9 for pronghorn, and a P8 for antlered mule, as well as a P4 for antlered moose and Camp Wainwright deer, but I will likely be using 999 for everything this year.

Sheep?  Do you know what that animal is Dale?  ;D  I didn't think you were into it enough to go and get another one.
All I know is I have to stop outfitting so I can actually do my own hunting.  It seems to have been less and less every year now.  Other than Africa I might get in a handfull of days whitetail hunting and possibly sheep hunting.  I will draw my Elk tag I think so it depends on how much time that takes to get my bull.  I really miss sheep hunting.  I could spend 2-3 weeks every year hunting sheep if i could.

I hear you Nube. I've pretty well given up guiding just for the reason of not hunting much here in Alberta with the family. And now with the oldest boy being able to hunt it will be an even bigger priority to be home now. Already planning a two week backpack sheep hunt for this years opener with the two young guides.

My oldest is 10 so I have a couple years to go till I can get them out.  I wish I could get out ice fishing more but I have 4 kids and the youngest is 3.  Hard to get the youngest 2 out because of the cold.  Hopefully in a few more years I can get out more with the whole family.  Last year i had 86 clients and I am thinking I need to either hire someone to run things a bit for me or just cut back on the amount of guys i take.  I only have one more spot open for this year and then I am booked up so it looks like I won't have much time to do much this year other than a couple big hunts.  I got to slow down a bit!! :o

some guys are just driven by them curly horned critters...some not so much.  i like hunting just about anything i can....but some things are definitely higher on the priority list.  for me its whitetails....the most common animal out there, yet the hardest to consistently score on a big mature trophy.  i guess sheep to me are like mule deer...only maybe not as smart,  ;D.  the toughest thing about killing a ram is finding him.  ive yet to see one run away.  i havent targeted them much, but used to see them near enough every day when i hunted elk in k-country.  honestly, i may have seen legal rams back then, but didnt pay any attention or look close enough to see if they were legal.  whichever.....i like killing stuff with my bow, and a late season draw might be the best way to do that.  if nothing else its the best bet after sitting on the cadomin boundary for a big ram.  i guess if the sheep hunting in alberta was a little better quality hunt i would have more interest.

oh, just about forgot that high priority for elk....thats another option i need to consider this fall.  sigh, decisions decisions.  :)

Kevin and I are up for a pile of draws this year including moose, possibly elk, wainwright, antlered mulies and more.  Can't wait it should be a fantastic season.
