Big Deer
« on: July 20, 2011, 10:48:22 AM »
Alex from Advantage taxidermy sent me this picture of a deer he just finished the other day.  What a pig of a deer.  I rough scored it when I was in his shop and I think I got about 213"
Alex is keeping up on doing some fantastic work!  http://www.advantagetaxidermy.com/

here is another one that he just sent me.  Waleyes, he just did a badger a couple weeks ago and it looked great.  He does a pile of small things like fishers, mink, marten , wolverines and badgers.

Exactly what I said when I saw it and I was told it went 215.  I scored it quickly 2 times and got 213 and 209 so I am not far off on a quick score.  I was surprised to see it went over 200 on first glimpse.

no, i meant 3 point.  i wouldnt call it an 8 point either.  i dont see the need to exaggerate.....he is what he is.

anyway, im seeing a 175 frame with 24ish inches on the drops.  id guess a whisker shy of 200 gross, but ill believe you.  pics dont always show everything.  honestly, id shoot it, but id be a little disappointed in point count when i walked up to it.

It was just a little joke bambi, I was just feeling a little cheeky today. :)  That whole "3 point vs. 4 point vs. 5 point" argument has been tossed around these message boards forever.  Whatever you call it, it's still an unreal deer.  I wouldn't call it an 8 point either BTW.

I wouldn't call it an 8 point either.  I would call it a 4x4 like it should be called 8) :o
If you look at it Bambi it has an extra point coming off of the drop point that has some decent length and the bottom of the drop point also splits off.  There is also a big dagger off of the left browtime that has some good length that comes forward.  It is what it is and I have now need to make it bigger than it is.  One nice deer.  It isn't the look of a 200"+ deer that I would like but I would take it anyday in a hearbeat.   ;D

im sure it all adds up......  its pretty hard to hold a tape wrong.  i guess its just the frame that doesnt have enough wow appeal.  like i said, id shoot in a heartbeat.

also nube, some guys are pretty optimistic in their scores posted on the interweb.  i have never doubted a score you have posted.

That's because it is not my deer!!! ;D  If it was I would add another 20 points to it.
That is exactly why I scored it because it did not have a wow  look to it.  I will say that I got to cape it and was there when he put it together. ;D  The mount was really well done I thought.

i wouldnt say it has no wow factor.....the dimensions look pretty big.  its definately wide and tall and the kind of deer you dont have to look long at to shoot.  its just disappointing to see so few typical points is all.

and i know its not yours.  you told us your biggest grosses 181 if i remember right.  also a deer that requires no wondering if you should shoot or not.  when they are big you know it.

I haven't made it to the big time yet with deer like yours Dale.  I'm still in little league with the 180's :'(  This year is going to change that though.

Im confused why you wouldnt call it a 4 point?  Do brow tines not count?  i know i dont count brows for mulies but always have for whiteys

no, youre there.  youre a 900 club member and youve proven that every year you are capable of bringing home a big mature buck.  scores are overrated in some ways.  taking a 200 incher isnt so much skill as luck.  most people never will and me doing it is nothing other than good fortune.....  especially since i live more than 5 hours from where hunt.  i have seen a few more over 200, but it hasnt worked out as well as the first one did.....yet.  i may never kill another that size, but either way i am into full grown mature bucks every year.  to me thats more impressive than 1 booner.  heck, even a 180 gross buck is much bigger than the vast majority of hunters will ever kill.   and honestly....how many guys can legit say that they are disappointed walking up to a 167 gross buck?  not very dang many....

your statement makes me ask why you would count em on a whitetail then?  if you dont on a mule then why on a whitetail?

there really is no right or wrong answer kyle.  if you and the crew you hunt with count em, no sweat.....as long as you all know what you are talking about.  the people i have always hunted with dont, so we all know what we are talking about.  this is just opinion, but i have always thought if you do its because you are trying to make the deer sound bigger, and americans take it even further and count both sides.  whatever works for you.....there is no standard.  as far as i know, the only time point counting ever mattered was back when mule deer were on a point count restriction.....and they didnt include brow tines.

Nube, do you know where that freaky droptine thing was shot?  It sure looks like the one I saw in a field pic last fall that was shot west of the big powerline in 350.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

No idea where it was shot AXE.  I do not think it was up north at all though.

"and honestly....how many guys can legit say that they are disappointed walking up to a 167 gross buck?  not very dang many...."

I did that last year and i honestly was disapointed.  It was not suposed to be me killing it and it would have meant more to my hunting partner that day than me for sure.  I am still debating even hanging it on my wall.  Now that I can do my own deer I think I may do it but If I had to pay someone to do it there is no way I would get it done.

I talk about my mule deer by saying it was a 4x4 with brow tines or a 4x4 without brow tines.  Mules deer sometimes don't have the brow points and this way it gives the person you are talking to the info needed to understand what kind of a deer it is.

Whitetail are always 5x5 or 4x4.  They all have brow tines on any normal deer.  The main beam is a point.  My way of doing it
